When you hold a piece of wood in your hands, you can feel its unique texture depending on the type. Its appearance, surface feel, hardness, weight, sound when tapped, and even its scent engage all five senses. I want to introduce these woods with the hope that you can fully enjoy your favorite one.

In this case, I would like to briefly explain why we chose Reclaimed Teak during the wood selection process, along with a bit of teak’s history. The key points worth highlighting are its “Excellent texture (fragrance and feel)” and its “Resistance to water”. The story of the teak used on the Titanic’s deck, which remains intact even after sinking over 100 years ago, is a testament to the durability of teak wood. Let me first introduce an overview of teak.
今回は、木材選定の過程で古材チークを選んだ理由と、チーク材の歴史について簡単に説明したいと思います。特に注目すべき点は「質感の良さ（香り・肌触り）」と「水への耐性」です。約100年前に沈没したタイタニック号のデッキに使用されたチーク材が、いまだ無傷で残っているという話は、チーク材の強さを物語っています。まずは、チーク材の概要からご紹介します。
Overview of Teak Wood / チーク材の概要
Teak is considered one of the “Three Great Woods of the World,” along with walnut and mahogany. It is especially known for its durability and beautiful grain, and is used in a variety of applications such as furniture, flooring, and shipbuilding.
チークは、ウォールナット、マホガニーと並び「世界三大銘木」の一つに数えられる高級木材です。特に耐久性と美しい木目で知られ、家具、フローリング、造船など多用途に利用されています。
There are two types of teak wood: natural and plantation-grown. While natural teak was once found in Myanmar, Indonesia, India, and Thailand, today it is only sourced from Myanmar.
チーク材には、天然ものと植林ものの2種類があります。天然のチーク材はミャンマー、インドネシア、インド、タイに自生していましたが、現在ではミャンマーでしか産出されていません。
In Myanmar, long-term logging plans ensure that natural teak, known as “genuine teak,” is maintained at a high quality. This teak is highly valuable and expensive. Although it is possible to acquire genuine teak in Japan, its export volume is small, making it difficult to obtain.

In contrast, all teak from Indonesia is plantation-grown and referred to as “Nesia Teak.” Compared to Myanmar’s genuine teak, Nesia Teak has a lower wood density and is of somewhat lower quality. As a result, it is priced lower than genuine teak.

India, once a major exporter of natural teak, has ceased exports due to conservation policies. While plantation-grown teak is exported from countries other than Myanmar and Indonesia, the teak commonly available in Japan is primarily sourced from these two countries.

The Option of Reclaimed Teak / 古材という選択肢
Freshly harvested teak wood (new timber) contains a high amount of moisture (high moisture content). As a result, if it has not been sufficiently dried, the wood may crack or warp during use. This is especially important when using it for furniture or flooring, so it’s crucial to choose properly dried teak wood.
新しく伐採されたチーク材（新材）は、木に多くの水分を含んでいます（含水率が高い）。そのため、乾燥が不十分だと、使用中に木が割れたり、反ったりする可能性があります。特に家具やフローリングに使う際は、しっかり乾燥されたチーク材を選ぶことが重要です。
If only inadequately dried new timber is available, opting for reclaimed wood is a wiser choice. Reclaimed wood has had a long time to dry, and as a result, the wood is often much more durable. Such reclaimed teak is more stable than new wood, making it less prone to cracking or warping.
もし十分に乾燥されていない新材しか手に入らない場合、古材を選ぶ方が賢明です。古材は長い時間をかけて乾燥が進んでおり、木材が非常に頑丈になっていることが多いです。こうした古材は、新材に比べて安定性があり、割れや反りが生じにくいという利点があります。
Reclaimed wood often comes from the dismantling of old houses or ships, each with its own unique character and texture developed over years of use. Particularly, teak recovered from sunken ships has a distinct charm that is highly prized.

However, due to the declining number of buildings and ships using teak wood, the supply of reclaimed wood has been decreasing in recent years. As a result, reclaimed wood is becoming increasingly rare and prices are rising.
しかし、近年ではチーク材を使用した建物や船が少なくなっているため、古材の供給は減少傾向にあります。その結果、古材はますます貴重な存在となり、価格も上昇しています。

Teak wood can be wiped with water, making it very easy to maintain in daily use. Unlike other types of wood, teak is water-resistant, so there is no restriction on wiping it with water. When it gets dirty, you can simply clean it with water, making it convenient for maintenance.

We tested various woods, including hinoki, sugi, red pine, oak, and selangan batu, but the best fit for our products was reclaimed teak.
